Orsted has applied for permits to build four additional gigascale offshore wind projects in Sweden that would push its portfolio there to a massive 18GW – enough to cover more than half of the Nordic country’s total electricity consumption.

The Danish developer said the new sources of power are urgently needed, given that Sweden’s electricity consumption is expected to double by 2035. Delivery dates for its projects are timed to coincide with grid build-out plans by transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnät, so that Orsted can feed new offshore energy to the grid as soon as the TSO is ready.
