The oil & gas industry planted its flag firmly in the future of UK offshore wind, as supermajors BP and Total were among those successful in Britain’s first leasing round for wind at sea in a decade, with RWE the biggest single winner.

Seabed landlord the Crown Estate on Monday named preferred bidders for six project leases representing almost 8GW of capacity for wind farms designed to help propel the UK to its target of 40GW of offshore wind in place by 2030, four times the current total.
