After more than a decade as head of R&D for global offshore wind pioneer Orsted, Christina Aabo is better placed than most to take the sector’s temperature, and her verdict is stark. “We have a fundamentally sick industry.”

In a year that has already seen major new seabed awards off Scotland and most recently the US, and amid stratospheric global growth forecasts for offshore wind, Aabo is adamant that nobody should be fooled that all is well.

“The volumes are going up – but no one is making any money,” warns Aabo, who left Orsted in January and is now poised for a new start at offshore wind consultancy Green Ducklings (see panel).
