The UK’s contract-for-difference (CfD)-based auctions have been hailed as the secret sauce that helped Britain to a global leadership position in the sector, but Orsted’s Benj Sykes believes the recipe now needs changing.

After more than a decade at the sharp end of UK offshore wind for Orsted and as part of key industry bodies, Sykes has witnessed – and helped shape – much of the process of continuous change that has seen more than 10GW deployed, the amassing of a 91GW project pipeline that’s second only to China and sharp falls in power costs over successive auctions.
