Vestas said a “potential gamechanger” floating turbine installation technique is set to make its debut in the Baltic Sea after the OEM tied up a firm supply order for the Arcadis Ost offshore wind farm from developer Parkwind.

The Danish group will deploy 27 of its V174-9.5 MW machines at the site in the German Baltic northeast of the island of Rugen using the method developed with contractor Heerema.

Installation of the turbines will be carried out from late 2022 using a floating vessel rather than a conventional jack-up, removing the need for the latter to plant its legs amid what can be challenging local soil conditions.
