Nordex and the Fraunhofer IWES institute for wind energy systems in Bremerhaven, Germany, have developed a new drive train test bench that the OEM said can reduce “time consuming” measurements on prototypes in the field.

The so-called ‘hardware-in-the-loop’ test bench was created over a period of three years to test the electric drive train of wind turbines in isolation on a grid simulator. All other components of the wind turbine are simulated in real time and the test bench can be operated regardless of the weather – a big advantage according to Nordex.
