Navajo Nation embraces renewables as it turns from coal
Largest US tribe's leadership issues proclamation taking new direction for energy development and 'healing of land' from mining and burning coal
The Navajo Nation will now “pursue and prioritise” renewable energy development on its sprawling reservation across four states, as it transitions from thermal coal that has underpinned the economy of America’s largest Indian tribe for decades.
Earlier this month, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer issued a proclamation to create a new economic vision with a focus on "healing the land" and providing new direction for energy development.
Their focus will be on construction of utility-scale and community projects, mainly solar PV but possibly other renewables technologies including wind and energy storage.
