Talk of turbine ‘modularisation’ might not excite in the way the prospect of wind power taking up the role of a mainstream global energy source with several terawatts of plant online by 2050 does. But this latter ambition will be impossible without it, given that turbine manufacture and installation rates, by International Energy Agency calculations, will have to quadruple this decade to contribute to global 2050 net zero targets.
