The $3.58bn project is among the largest proposed by a credible developer in the US wind industry’s four-decade history. Iowa-based MidAmerican, part of billionaire Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate, owns more wind power capacity (3.45GW) than any US utility.

When Wind XI is fully online, MidAmerican says it will be able to generate wind energy equal to 85% of its annual customer sales in Iowa.
