US utility MidAmerican Energy has removed some Vestas turbines from service after suffering a second blade fall within a month – and fourth within a year – from the manufacturer’s machines at its Iowa wind farms, as it linked them to lightning protection systems.

MidAmerican told Recharge it had acted with an “abundance of caution” to pause 46 turbines after a blade detached at its Beaver Creek Wind Farm in Iowa on 15 October.
