MHI Vestas seeks US offshore wind 'critical scale'

MHI Vestas is encouraged by the US government’s strategy to develop an offshore wind industry, but would need to see “critical scale” between one and two gigawatts of annual new build to consider investing in a manufacturing plant there, says Uffe Vinter-Schou, chief sales officer at the company.

“That would be immensely helpful to a play establishing manufacturing turbines in the US,” he told an audience at the American Wind Energy Association Windpower event in Orlando, Florida.

Vinter-Schou says any potential US plant would produce the 8MW turbine since Vestas can already manufacture the MHI Vestas 3MW offshore machine in all its variants at plants in Colorado. That also means the smaller turbine is “fully US sourced.”
