The announcement of the plan — which could help Boston-based Altaeros to deploy its Buoyant Airborne Turbine (BAT) technology throughout the world — comes roughly nine months after Japanese telecoms group SoftBank’s $7m investment in the company, which was established at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010.

The BAT uses a three-bladed rotor in an open-centred, helium-filled blimp to catch wind at higher altitudes than traditional tower-mounted turbines.
