Mill Creek – which will use 26 Siemens 2.3MW turbines – will cost NZ$169m ($132.6m) to construct and NZ$3.3m a year to operate, says the power producer.

The company originally wanted the wind farm, northwest of Wellington, to feature an extra five turbines, but was forced to scale it back following objections.

Meridian has been waiting to begin work at the site since obtaining approval last August.
