The state-run Maldivian electrical utility signed an agreement that will see the $200m wind farm built and operated by Singapore-based offshore Falcon Energy using 30 General Electric turbines.
By the time the project is complete in 2011 the wind farm will provide enough electricity to power the Maldivian capital, Malé, the country’s international airport and the surrounding tourist resorts.
The Maldives, spread across twenty-six atolls in the Indian Ocean, is widely seen as one of the countries most threatened by the prospect of rising sea levels as a result of climate change.
