New North Sea wind farms should pay a compulsory ‘community benefit’ levy potentially worth million of pounds a year to compensate coastal regions impacted by massive development offshore, said a new report from an influential UK think-tank.

The £0.50/MWh ($0.65/MWh) charge is among a string of recommendations from Policy Exchange that also includes appointing a minister for North Sea development, to oversee a region that it said could be worth £20bn a year to the British economy and support 40,000 new jobs by 2050.
