The US government on Wednesday will auction off a vast 488,201 acres of prime ocean real estate in the New York Bight – an area over twice size of New York City itself – in the biggest offshore wind energy lease auction yet held in American waters.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), the agency under the Department of the Interior charged with managing development in federal waters, will award six lease areas totalling offshore wind power capacity of between5.6GW
