Tokyo-headquarter industrial giant Sumitomo Corporation has formed a eight-company consortium to develop offshore wind farms off Japan, capping a week that saw several high-profile agreements signaling a building of momentum as the Asian island nation moves toward a landmark auction later this year.

Sumitomo, along with energy companies Inpex, JR East Energy, Japex and Tepco, and contractors Narita, Kato Construction and Wenty, are targeting developing wind power projects in the East Sea off the north west of Japan.
