With more than 62,000km of lines, Rome-based Terna is the world’s seventh largest grid operator, and currently owns 98% of Italy’s transmission wires.

Formerly a subsidiary of Italian utility Enel, Terna sees tremendous commercial potential in DII, which aims to source 15% of the EU’s electricity from a series of wind and solar parks across North Africa by 2050.

Terna “always evaluated with great interest the opening of new markets through developing electricity interconnectors, and transferring knowhow between Europe and the southern Mediterranean area,” says chief executive Flavio Cattaneo.
