The gigantic, complex platforms — where the turbines’ electricity is stepped up for high-voltage transmission to shore — are blamed for a host of project delays and hundreds of millions of euros in cost overruns.

The stations, which weigh 1,000-4,000 tonnes and can cost up to €80m ($100m), have been deemed unviable in the long term by many industry leaders — especially if the sector is to get costs below €100 per MWh by the end of the decade.
