Iberdrola awards Baltic survey work for 400MW Wikinger wind
Iberdrola has hired the UK’s Gardline and GEO of Denmark to carry out seabed geology surveys for its 400MW Wikinger offshore wind farm.
The Spanish utility giant will pay Gardline and GEO a total of €18m ($22m) to carry out the survey work at the 34 sq km site of the 80-turbine development in the German Baltic.
The companies will use specially-designed vessels to take stratigraphic samples of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, requiring 63-metre boreholes to be drilled.
They will also conduct seismic surveys using sound waves to determine the structure of the terrain, says Iberdrola.
The data will be used to determine foundation design for the €1.6bn Wikinger development – which at depths of more than 40 metres is the largest deepwater wind farm so far in German waters.
Recharge revealed in June that Gamesa is on the shortlist to supply wind turbines to Wikinger, which Iberdrola plans to begin exporting power from in 2016.
