Heavy-lift specialist outfit Jumbo will begin transporting monopiles and transition pieces (TPs) from Germany to Taiwan later this year for its biggest-ever contract – installation of the foundations for the giant Yunlin offshore wind farm being developed by WPD-subsidiary Yunneng Windpower.
The Dutch-headquartered contractor’s work-scope encompasses ferrying out 40 monopiles and TPs, fabricated by Bladt, as well as the installation of 80 TPs for the 640MW project.
Preparation and planning works have already begun, Jumbo said in a statement, with the transportation set to start in Q4, and installation to follow “in mid-2020”.
“The Yunlin project is the largest single contract we have been awarded in our 50-year history, and it is particularly special as it allows us to combine the strengths of both our shipping and offshore divisions,” said Jumbo managing director Michael Kahn.
“Our specialised teams, together with our partners, will provide a unique integrated T&I [transportation and installation] solution – from quayside to seabed – for Yunneng.”
Jumbo will use its K-class and J-class heavy-lift vessels (HLVs) as well as other third-party HLVs and deck carriers for shipping the monopiles and TPs.
In May, Siemens Gamesa confirmed supply 80 of its 8MW SG8.0-167s for the wind farm, with Fred Olsen Windcarrier signed up to install the turbines.
The Yunlin project, six kilometres off the southwest coast of Taiwan, will be completed in two phases next year and in 2021.
