Governments aiming to weave in offshore wind power to their national energy mixes need to move quickly to set out near-horizon roadmaps that factor-in ongoing cost reduction realities, while working with industry to drive technology innovation that will support long-term commercial prospects, a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) has advised.

The report highlights forecasts suggesting global offshore wind capacity will expand three-fold by 2020 as costs fall further, meaning offshore wind “could be fully integrated into the market on a competitive basis in some European countries” within the next decade.
