Google expects to utilize existing transmission lines and repurpose other infrastructure at the facility.
The internet giant plan to begin construction of the data center in 2016.
“Data centers need a lot of infrastructure to run 24/7, and there’s a lot of potential in redeveloping large industrial sites like former coal power plants,” writes Patrick Gammons, senior manager, data center energy and location strategy at Google in a blog posting.
