The global floating wind pipeline has more than doubled to 185GW, according to latest data from industry group RenewableUK.
The increase from 91GW a year ago was accompanied by a surge in projects to 230 from 130 previously, the body’s latest EnergyPulse reports.
The floating sector now has 121MW fully commissioned over nine projects in seven countries, with 96MW under construction, 288MW consented or in pre-construction, 31GW in planning or with a lease agreement and 153GW in early development or the leasing process.
The UK remains the leading market for floating wind projects, with a pipeline now in excess of 33GW, the majority of it in Scotland, according to the data. Other key markets include South Korea, Sweden, Ireland and the US West Coast.
RenewableUK CEO Dan McGrail said: “The growth of floating wind is surging ahead at a phenomenal rate year on year around the world. We’re proud that the UK is a global leader in this innovative technology with nearly a fifth of the total pipeline – significantly greater than any other country.
“In the years ahead, as we build projects further out to sea where wind speeds are even stronger, floating wind will play a central role in proving cheap, clean electricity for British homes as well as boosting our energy security.”
The data also noted that demand for floating foundations is set to ramp up fast, with the potential for nearly 1,000 floating foundations to be installed in UK waters by the end of 2030. “Globally 3,200 floating foundations could be installed by the end of the decade,” said RenewableUK.
Consultancy DNV calculates floating wind projects currently make up over 15% of the total offshore wind deployment in the pipeline for switch-on by mid-century, equal to some 264GW of the 1,750GW slated to be installed.
