German onshore wind additions surged, but still remain at a level that is far too low to reach national and European climate targets, first half 2021 figures show.

Europe’s largest economy installed 971MW in new wind capacity on land, a 62%-increase from the first half of last year, Deutsche Windguard said, which provided the statistics for Germany’s wind energy federation BWE and manufacturers group VDMA Power Systems.

Once 140MW in decommissioned turbines are subtracted, net additions reached 831MW. That pushed Germany’s cumulated wind power generation capacity to 55.77GW.
