A court has halted deforestation for lignite mining of the Hambach Forest near Cologne by utility RWE, handing environmentalists a temporary victory as mass protests against Germany’s most disputed energy project continued over the weekend.
The higher administrative court in Münster last week barred RWE from clearing the forest until it reaches a final verdict in main proceedings, which the utility said may take until the end of 2020.
