GE Vernova has landed a second Japanese order in quick succession with a deal to supply turbines for a 90MW onshore wind farm.

The US turbine maker announced today (Wednesday) that it has been selected as the supplier for the Abukuma South Wind Farm near the city of Iwaki in the eastern Fukushima prefecture.

GE Vernova will supply 28 of its 3.2-103 turbines, while it has also entered a long-term full-service agreement with the developer, Abukuma South Wind Power.

The order follows news last month that German utility RWE has ordered 38, 18MW GE Vernova turbines for a planned 684MW offshore wind farm that will face the cities of Murakami and Tainai.

GE Vernova said today that the onshore order is its second in Japan with local wind power specialist Cosmo Eco Power, which is one of the shareholders of Abukuma South Wind Power.

Steve Swift, chief commercial officer of GE Vernova’s onshore wind business, said: “We appreciate the confidence that Cosmo Eco Power has shown in our 3MW class turbine line and value the continued opportunity to advance the government’s renewable energy goals with wind power.”

GE Vernova said the deal will support Fukushima prefecture’s goal of hitting 100% renewables by 2040. It will also help Japan’s national target of upping the power it generates from renewables to up to 38% by 2030.

Sayuri Hashikawa, director and executive officer at Cosmo Eco, said the project will help add new green energy into the power mix as “one of the priority areas of the national project to rebuild the country” following the catastrophic 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

That tsunami famously hit a nuclear plant in Fukushima, prompting one of the worst nuclear accidents in history.
