One of world’s mightiest supercomputers is to be used by GE to delve into mysterious so-called coastal low-level jets streaming over the US Atlantic as part of a project that could “dramatically accelerate” the country’s development of its vast offshore wind energy resource.

The power technology giant, which is developing the giant 12MW Haliade-X turbine, has been granted access to the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee through a Department of Energy (DOE) programme to crunch vast volumes of data in the hopes of fine-tuning future wind farms to harness the “distinct wind velocity profile” found off the eastern seaboard.
