General Electric Renewable Energy has launched a new onshore wind platform known as Cypress that will for the first time push its onshore turbine product lineup beyond 5MW, including a two-piece blade design that will help with the logistics of transporting and installing such large machines.

The Cypress platform includes the 4.8-158 model that GE-RE launched last year, but adds a new 5.3MW machine with a 158-metre rotor diameter that the company says will be able to generate 20GWh per year – a 50% boost in annual energy production compared to GE’s 3MW platform.
