Floating wind pioneer BW Ideol and Tohoku Electric Power (TEP), one of Japan’s biggest utilities, agreed to push ahead with plans to develop a commercial-scale project in another sign of the technology’s growing traction in the Japanese market.

Norwegian-owned BW Ideol and TEP “signed a formal agreement and initiated the feasibility studies necessary” to advance the project off Kuji city on Japan’s east coast north of Tokyo.

BW Ideol was an early mover in the floating market that is set to play a key role in Japan’s offshore wind sector, with deep waters off the Asian nation containing many of the best resources for generation.
