The US government will hold a highly anticipated commercial lease auction next year for all or part of three wind areas off the coast of California, setting the stage for what could be record bids to supply power to the world’s fifth-largest economy.

“We anticipate conducting a sale in 2020,” said Walter Cruickshank, acting director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), adding the federal agency was reviewing expressions of interest from 14 companies/groups in the areas and initial feedback from a range of stakeholders.
