The North American arm of Portuguese developer EDP Renewables (EDPR) has set the seal on a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to sell the electricity produced by an unnamed 204MW wind project in Indiana, taking the total capacity it has secured through PPAs in the US to 2.3GW.

EDPR said securing new PPAs for its wind power assets reinforces its low-risk profile and growth strategy based on the development of competitive projects with long-term visibility.

The Madrid-based subsidiary of Portuguese utility Energías do Portugal last week unveiled a new €24bn ($29.3bn) five-year investment plan, as well as a target to add more than 50GW in renewables capacity this decade to remain a “green energy major” with a capacity of 90GW by 2030.

EDPR already is the world’s second largest operator of wind power, and under the new strategic plan will also greatly expand its solar power capacity, and venture into storage and green hydrogen.

North America (also including Canada and Mexico) under the company’s strategic plan is slated to receive about 40% of the €24bn ($28.8bn) EDPR has earmarked for investments in its 2021-25 strategic plan.

With that, the utility plans to add 8.8GW in capacity in the region, on top of the 6.8GW it already operates. A further 2.8GW are slated to be added in onshore wind – on top of 6.3GW already operational in North America – and 5.5GW in solar – on top of a mere 0.4GW operational now.

The Indianan wind project that will feed into the most recent PPA is expected to start operations in 2023.
