E.ON bags approval for 230MW Humber Gateway project

The UK government has given the go-ahead to E.ON’s 230MW Humber Gateway offshore project, delivering another boost to the northeast after Siemens’ recent confirmation that it will build an offshore turbine factory at the Port of Hull.

The Round 2 project has been downscaled to 230MW from its originally proposed footprint of 300MW, having faced resistance from the Ministry of Defence regarding radar concerns.

The £700m ($1.13bn) wind farm has been licensed for up to 77 turbines, suggesting the use of 3MW machines.

The approval was expected, as energy regulator Ofgem recently announced plans to issue a tender for the transmission lines to Humber Gateway in spring 2012 along with the West of Duddon Sands and Race Bank projects.
