The initial order is for the company’s 3MW and 5MW full conversion wind turbines, which AMSC designed and developed jointly with Dongfang, a unit of Chinese power equipment giant Dongfang Electric.
Ren Jiafu, vice general manager of Dongfang, says the company intends to begin volume shipments in 2012 and is also eyeing ways to upgrade its larger machine to 5.5MW.
The 3MW machines are designed for onshore and offshore wind sites, while the 5MW is specifically aimed at offshore applications.
