Danish offshore wind developer Dong Energy has contracted Nexans to supply 139km of submarine cables for the first of three construction phases at the vast 1.2GW Hornsea 1 mega-project in the UK North Sea.

The 34kV lines will inter-link 58 wind turbines to the offshore transformer station in the 406MW lead-off stage of the development, located in 20-40 metres of water 120km off northeast England.

Supply of the cables, part of a 2014 frame agreement between Dong and Nexans, will begin in spring 2018 out of the contractor's Hanover factory in Germany and should be completed "around a year later".
