Vattenfall on Thursday cut the ribbon at the Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm, Denmark’s and Scandinavia’s largest at 407MW.

Denmark’s Crown Prince and its Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, led VIPs marking the opening of the wind farm, which will supply the power needs of 425,000 Danish homes from its site in the North Sea.

The plant uses 8.3MW turbines from MHI Vestas and was built after Vattenfall won a 2015 competitive tender with what at the time was as record-low price for offshore wind output.

Horns Rev 3 is soon set to be outstripped by the 600MW Kriegers Flak project, also being developed by Vattenfall and due to enter service in the Danish Baltic Sea in 2021.

Denmark is currently planning three further 800MW offshore wind projects under the scope of its 2018 Energy Agreement.

The first of those, in the North Sea and called Thor , will go out for tender this year and is due in service by 2027.
