DEME Offshore has been awarded a contract for the transport and installation of the jackets and topsides for two Dutch offshore wind substations in the Hollandse Kust cluster by Engie-Smulders tie-up Engie Solutions-lemants .

The Belgian contractor will also supply and install scour protection – which prevents erosion to the seabed under a foundation – for two 700MW substations. One will serve the Hollandse Kust North project and another the first phase (alpha) of the Hollandse Kust West project.

“We are very pleased with the trust one of the most experienced leaders in offshore substation construction has again placed in DEME Offshore,” DEME Offshore business unit director Bas Nekeman said.

“The combination of Engie Solutions-Iemants’ extensive know-how, combined with our expertise in tailored solutions for the offshore wind industry, has proven to be successful in the past few years when we have worked closely together to achieve challenging projects such as the SeaMade and Moray East offshore wind farms.”

The 700MW Hollandse Kust North project is slated to be operational in 2023 as the last of five offshore wind arrays planned to boost the Netherland’s capacity of wind at sea to 4.5GW by that date.

Hollandse Kust West is a 1.4GW project that already forms part of the 7GW next and bigger expansion phase that is slated to boost the country’s offshore wind capacity to 11.5GW by 2030. At the beginning of the coming decade, the Netherlands plan to source 40% of their electricity from North Sea wind power.

Installation of the scour protection and jacket for Hollandse Kust North is planned for the second half of 2021, while the topside for Hollandse Kust North and jacket for Hollandse Kust West (alpha) will be installed during the summer of 2022. The topside for Hollandse Kust West (alpha) is slated to be installed in 2023.
