Danish offshore wind turbine technology R&D centre LORC has switched on the world’s most powerful highly accelerated lifetime testing (Halt) test bench, a 25MW rig capable of exerting an unprecedented 85 million Newton-metres (Nm) of torque on a drive-train.

The new Halt XL test bench, which is mounted a 30-metre-long concrete base, uses a “stepped stress-testing approach” that trials prototype products with “diverse accelerated stresses to discover the physical limitations of a design and ascertain product reliability”, said Sascha Heinecke, sales director a R&D Test Systems, which delivered the rig.
