Offshore wind OEM MHI Vestas has chosen the Port of Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm for pre-assembly and shipment of turbines for the 257MW Arcadis Ost 1 project being developed by Parkwind in the German Baltic Sea.

The 27 V174-9.5MW turbines are to be installed at the development site, located in 42-46 metres of water off the island of Rugen, in June 2022. Once commissioned in 2023, Arcadis Ost 1 will supply electricity to 300,000 households.

Peter Toft Madsen, MHI Vestas’ head of port contracting & support, said the Port of Rønne, Denmark’s easternmost industrial port, was “a solid choice because of its unique infrastructure, designed and constructed specifically to handle projects with extreme weights”.

“The harbour is located only 74km from the Arcadis Ost 1 project site, and the quay construction at the port has the ideal lifting capacity for our needs, meaning we can ship our components directly to the quay.”

Port of Rønne CEO Thomas Bendtsen added: “We are pleased that MHI Vestas has selected [the port] for its offshore wind activities. I am happy to see how our new and specially-designed infrastructure is appreciated by our customers in the offshore wind industry.”

Winni Grosbøll, mayor at Bornholm’s municipality, noted MHI Vestas’ choosing Port of Roenne as the shipment harbour was “one of the most important achievements for our island in several years, and I see a lot of opportunities for how this can benefit local employment”.

Arcadis Ost 1 will see the first use of a floating wind installation vessel, following a year-long investigation of the technique with Heerema Marine Contractors and MHI Vestas to address the project’s chalk, glacial clay and soft soil seabed.
