China led the world in terms of new capacity in 2009, with 13.9GW of installed. This consisted of 10,129 turbines, or a rate of one new turbine per hour.

China currently ranks second in the world, with 25.8GW installed, in terms of overall capacity.

“China’s speed of wind power development is remarkable,” says Steve Sawyer, secretary general of GWEC. “In 2005, only one Chinese company was among the top 15 manufacturers in the world.
