Chinese wind tower company Titan Wind Energy has acquired a facility of insolvent German group Ambau in the coastal town of Cuxhaven, marking its move into the offshore foundation market.

“Ambau has been playing an important role of supplying foundations for offshore wind turbines in the North Sea area and has an ideal location for the future demand within the industry,” Titan Wind Energy’s Europe president Michael Buus Nielsen said.

“With the experience from the facility in Cuxhaven and the many years of experience from tower production in Denmark, we will be able to utilise the synergies and know-how to create a strong set up for the future.”

Ambau in February filed for insolvency due to a lack of sufficient orders, with a slow-down in Germany’s offshore wind expansion related to unambitious targets for wind at sea cited as a factor.

Titan Wind’s European headquarters are located in Varde, Denmark, where it took over the production of towers from Danish wind OEM Vestas. The company carries out surface treatment and assembly in the Danish North Sea port of Esbjerg.

The official takeover will take place in October, when Ambau in Cuxhaven fulfills its last customer obligations.
