Chemicals giant Ineos will buy offshore wind energy to help power its sites in Belgium.

Ineos signed a 10-year agreement for the purchase of 84MW-worth of output from the 340MW Norther project in the Belgian North Sea.

The chemicals sector is regularly cited as one of the toughest challenges facing efforts to decarbonise heavy industry.

The long-term deal will begin on 1 January 2021 and the power will initially be used by existing Ineos production sites, the chemicals group said.
