Floating wind power pioneer BW Ideol said its 40MW-plus floating wind pilot in California has advanced to the environmental assessment stage, advancing in a permitting process that may turn the project into one of the first wind farms off the state on the US Pacific Coast.

The California State Lands Commission on Oct. 21 authorised the solicitation of so-called ‘statements of interest’ for consultant services for the preparation of environmental documentation and mitigation monitoring of the project.

The pre-commercial floating pilot would be based on BW Ideol’s ‘damping pool’ technology and be installed off the Vanderberg Space Force Base in Santa Monica County.
