A subsidiary of US renewables pacesetter NextEra Energy Resources was sentenced to a five-year period of probation and ordered to pay almost $8.1m in fines and restitution after killing at least 150 eagles since 2012 across 50 wind farms.

ESI Energy pled guilty to three counts of violating the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). Each were based on the documented deaths of golden eagles due to blunt force trauma from being struck by a wind turbine blade at three of its facilities in New Mexico and Wyoming, where it had not applied for the necessary permits.
