Avangrid is also considering diving into the emerging US offshore wind market, chief executive James Torgerson said this week.

Avangrid, the second largest owner of US wind capacity after NextEra Energy, already has 744MW of wind capacity under construction in the US, including the 208MW Amazon Wind Farm East in North Carolina, which is due online by the end of this year using Gamesa turbines.

But the company is betting even bigger on the US market by buying enough wind components in 2016 to “safe harbour” 2GW of additional future projects, enabling them to receive the full wind production tax credit (PTC) if they are commissioned in time.
