This weekend, Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party elected Armin Laschet as their new leader, making him the individual likeliest – but not a certainty – to replace Angela Merkel as the country's chancellor and so become a major influence on the energy transition and expansion of renewables for years to come, both in Germany and the EU.
