ANALYSIS: Vestas' 2GW prospect shows scale of Siemens' task

The announcement from Vestas came as a result of “information in the market” but – on a day that the impending merger between its rivals Gamesa and Siemens looked set to dominate the headlines – the Danish group’s revelation that it’s in line for a 2GW deal in the US was a great way to say “don’t forget who’s boss around here”.

Thanks to its track record of previous supply deals and in-state factory, Siemens was seen as favourite to grab the blockbuster order from billionaire Warren Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy for its Wind XI development in Iowa that will take US onshore wind to a new level.

If it translates into a full order, the conditional deal for Vestas marks a major coup for the Danish group in a US market where it is already enjoying significant success.
