Renewable unit EDF Energies Nouvelles hopes to build an installed base of 2GW over the next five years after buying an 80% controlling stake in UPC Asia Wind Management (AWM), a Hong Kong-based developer – a move EDF claimed as the first “high ambition” move into Chinese renewables by a European energy group.

Its fellow European power majors, it is true to say, have so far mainly looked to other markets for new growth opportunities as wind expansion on their own continent slows.
