Energy will join Business and Industrial Strategy in a new department led by Greg Clark, the UK’s former communities secretary and a spokesman on energy and climate change when his Conservative Party was in opposition before 2010.
The decision by new Prime Minister Theresa May prompted an inevitable angry backlash from green campaigners, while Ed Miliband – the former leader of the opposition Labour Party and himself an ex-energy secretary at DECC – branded it “just plain stupid”, contending that the title of the department matters because it “shapes priorities and outcomes”.
