The shake-up comes after the World Trade Organization (WTO) last year ruledthat the flagship content scheme broke fair-trade rules.

Ontario energy minister Bob Chiarelli this week announcedthat the province – a global pioneer in renewables-friendly legislation –intends to comply with the WTO ruling. It lost its final appeal on the issue earlier this month.

The 2009 legislation linking feed-in tariff eligibility with up to 60% localproduction was credited with attracting major overseas manufacturers to theprovince.
